Steel Innovations Conference 2015

Singapore - a new downtown. Brendan McNiven - Principal, Building Engineering Melbourne, ARUP

Brendon is a structural engineer with specialist skills in lightweight steel structures. He currently leads Arup’s Building Structures group in Melbourne but spent eight years leading the buildings practice in Arup’s Singapore office.

He shares his experiences of working in Singapore including insights into the design of a number of recent steel ‘mega’ projects including The Singapore Flyer (until recently the tallest Observation wheel in the world at 165m), the skyline changing Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort (incorporating the longest habitable cantilever in the world at 65m), and the recently completed Singapore Sports hub (a new stadium enclosed by a 315m diameter steel dome).

Slab Panel Method Workshop (September 2014)

Application of the Slab Panel Method (SPM) and associated SPM software allows designers of steel framed buildings to value optimise the fire and structural engineering to avoid wasteful expenditure on applied fire proofing to those parts of the structure that do not need it. This is of substantial benefit in terms of reduced cost, reduced construction time and efficient utilisation of the country's resources in the construction industry sector. Read handouts from our SPM workshop led by industry experts.

Purchase the supporting SPM software here.

Steel: The Proven Performer for a New Christchurch

Designing A Resilient City (February 2012). Richard McGowan - Principal, Warren and Mahoney.

On 29 February 2012 SCNZ-hosted a highly successful industry forum entitled, Steel: the proven performer for a new Christchurch. The event was an opportunity for specifiers to understand how steel technology is designed to withstand seismic events; for builders to see how projects can be completed faster using steel; and developers/owners to learn how steel can produce good commercial outcomes.
