Following the success of our 2017 Steel Structures Seminar series, SCNZ is proud to announce that a new “Practical Steel Frame Design Seminar” will be delivered in venues across New Zealand throughout July/August.

Aimed at practicing structural engineers, the afternoon seminar will consist of two sessions:

Design of Seismic Resistant Steel Buildings – Moment Resisting Frames

  • Moment frame structures provide architectural freedom in design, permitting open bays and unobstructed view lines.
  • Both the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes have reminded Engineers of the importance of ensuring resilience in the design of seismic frames
  • Covered in this session will be
    • Seismic Response of Moment Resisting Steel Framed Seismic Resisting Systems
    • Design and detailing requirements for steel moment resisting frames to possess an appropriate level of ductility as well as to satisfy the earthquake loading provisions of the loading Standard
    • Worked example

Lessons learnt from the Kaikoura Earthquakes

  • The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake was the second largest earthquake event in New Zealand since European settlement.
  • A discussion of the seismic performance of steel buildings during the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake
  • HERA commissioned research to pinpoint any steel construction weaknesses.
  • The outcomes of this research are presented together with recommendations to further improve steel construction performance in severe earthquake events.

  • Smart design and detailing can have a significant impact on the cost of steel portal frame buildings.
