ARCHITECTURALLY EXPOSED STRUCTURAL STEEL

Architecturally Exposed Structural Steelwork (AESS) creates a dynamic and vital aesthetic for a building, and has experienced a rise in popularity globally over the past two decades.

However, AESS requires that architects not only understand the structural aspects of load paths, but also have expertise in designing connections and finishes that can be fabricated. Until recently, structural steel standards have been lacking in this area.

The Australia/New Zealand Guide for AESS was developed to facilitate better communication between architect, engineer and fabricator in this area. Its primary aim is to help architects to more fully understand the specification of AESS material. The buildings and connections included in the Guide are meant to be representative and to provide helpful visual references that support the key facts that are being explained. The wide range of projects illustrated also highlights the numerous possibilities available when designing with AESS.
